What is hyperemesis?
Have you heard of morning sickness? Well hyperemesis is the severe version of morning sickness that can last throughout the entire pregnancy.
Hyperemesis refers to a condition characterized by severe and persistent nausea and vomiting during pregnancy. Hyperemesis gravidarum, the most common form of hyperemesis, typically occurs during the first trimester of pregnancy, although it can last throughout the entire pregnancy in some cases. It is estimated to affect about 0.5-2% of pregnant women.
The exact cause of hyperemesis is not fully understood, but it is believed to involve a combination of hormonal, psychological, and genetic factors. Changes in hormone levels, particularly elevated levels of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), have been associated with the condition. Other factors such as a history of motion sickness, multiple pregnancies (e.g., twins), and a family history of hyperemesis may also increase the risk.
Symtoms include:
Persistent nausea and vomiting that does not subside.
Inability to keep down food or fluids, leading to dehydration and weight loss.
Electrolyte imbalances and nutritional deficiencies.
Fatigue and weakness.
Faintness or dizziness.
Increased heart rate.
Decreased urine output.
What can help manage hyperemesis?
Regular Adjustments throughout pregnancy- Chiropractic adjustments can help balance out the nervous system in particular the nerves that innervate the digestive tract. In addition, chiropractic adjustments can enhance the function of the vagus nerve (located at the base of the skull) that controls the involuntary actions of the digestive tract.
Dietary Modifications- Eating small, frequent meals and avoiding trigger foods or odors. Supplements and essential oils that help reduce nausea including peppermint, ginger and vitamin B6.
Stay Hydrated-Drinking plenty of fluids with electrolytes and using oral rehydration solutions to prevent dehydration. Some examples include watermelon juice, coconut water and electrolyte packets. Try this brand of electrolyte packet ( LMNT ) that includes sodium, potassium and magnesium with no added sugar.
Acupuncture and Acupressure Points- this can stimulate the nervous system and help regulate the digestive system to reduce symptoms of nausea and vomiting during pregnancy.
