What is Diastasis Recti?

Diastasis recti is a condition where the abdominal muscles separate, often due to pregnancy or childbirth.

The rectus abdominal muscle runs vertically from the chest to the pelvis. This muscle is connected in the center of the belly by connective tissue called Linea Alba. During the second and third trimester, as the belly stretches, it puts pressure on the Linea Abla causing it to separate and thus separating the rectus abdominal muscle.

Chiropractic care can potentially help with diastasis recti in several ways:

  1. Postural Assessment and Correction: Chiropractors are trained to assess posture and body mechanics, and they can identify any imbalances or misalignments that may be contributing to diastasis recti. By correcting posture and alignment issues, chiropractic adjustments can help relieve excess pressure on the abdominal muscles and promote proper muscle function.

  2. Core Strengthening Exercises: Chiropractors can provide guidance on specific exercises and stretches that target the abdominal muscles and help to strengthen the core. Strengthening the core muscles can help to support the abdominal wall and reduce the severity of diastasis recti.

  3. Soft Tissue Techniques: Chiropractors may use soft tissue techniques such as myofascial release or trigger point therapy to address any tightness or tension in the muscles around the abdominal area. This can help to release tightness in the muscles and improve their function.

  4. Nutritional and Lifestyle Advice: Chiropractors often provide advice on nutrition and lifestyle modifications that can support overall health and well-being. This may include recommendations for a healthy diet, proper hydration, stress management, and other lifestyle changes that can help promote healing and recovery from diastasis recti.

It's important to note that chiropractic care should be used as part of a comprehensive approach to diastasis recti management, and it's crucial to consult with a qualified healthcare professional, such as a chiropractor or a healthcare provider who specializes in postpartum care, for an individualized treatment plan. Chiropractic care may not be suitable for everyone, and it's essential to consider any underlying health conditions, pregnancy status, and other individual factors when determining the most appropriate treatment approach for diastasis recti.
